Nice to meet you. I'm Riju Nakamori. Starting this year, I became a Kindle author. ...Phrased like that, it sounds rather impressive. Writing a manuscript with a cup of coffee in hand, sitting in a study overlooking lush greenery. Occasionally gazing into the distance, nodding quietly to oneself. Hearing the word "author," that might be the kind of image some people imagine. In my case, I do gaze into the distance. But it's not because a brilliant turn of phrase came to mind. Usually, it's just: "Wait, what on earth was I about to write?" I'm in my 50s, originally from Tokyo. I have a wife and an only daughter. I write essays that make you laugh and leave you feeling just a little bit warmed inside. That's the kind of work I do. My topics range from bizarre family mishaps and everyday misunderstandings to memories of the Showa era. Looking back on my life, I'm sure there must be a few instructive, insightful tales, but for some reason, the first things that pop into my head are always stories of "Why on earth did I do that?" It’s like I was searching for deeply moving, highlight-reel moments, only to accidentally crack open a blooper reel of my family. That’s pretty much how it goes. But now, it's precisely those bloopers that I want to capture and write down. There Was a Time When I Couldn't Laugh Despite introducing myself like this, my life hasn't always been full of laughter. In my 40s, I developed depression. Things that had always been second nature to me were no longer possible. I learned firsthand that there are days when sheer willpower simply isn't enough. No matter how much you tell yourself to "hang in there," neither your mind nor your body will follow. And then, you end up blaming yourself even more. Even when you're supposed to be resting, an endless stream of self-criticism keeps playing in your head. I can't do this; I can't do that.
