Google
Argleton was a non-existent phantom settlement that appeared on Google's mapping services.
Until it was corrected in mid-December 2009, the name appeared near the village of Aughton in Lancashire, England.
In reality, however, the location is merely an empty field.
"Argleton" on Google
The coordinates displayed for "Argleton" on Google Maps and Google Earth were 53.543°N, 2.912°W (53.543; -2.912).
This location falls within the parish of Aughton—a village of about 8,000 residents in West Lancashire—right by the A59 road connecting Liverpool and York.
Because Google's data is utilized by other online information services, numerous listings treated the town as if it actually existed, displaying entries such as "Weather in Argleton," "Real Estate in Argleton," and "Jobs in Argleton."
The people, businesses, and services associated with "Argleton" were real, but they actually belonged to the surrounding area that shares the same L39 postcode.
Discovery and Fame
The first person to take note of and respond to the non-existent town of "Argleton" was Mike Nolan, the head of a web services company in the neighbouring town of Ormskirk.
In September 2008, Nolan wrote a post on his blog about this "ghost settlement" that seemed to exist across the internet.
