Paul (German: Paul der Krake, Oktopus-Orakel; January 2008 – October 26, 2010) was a common octopus (*Octopus vulgaris*) formerly kept at the Sea Life Oberhausen public aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. He gained international fame by predicting the results of the German national soccer team's international matches, correctly guessing four out of six matches in UEFA Euro 2008 and achieving a perfect record by correctly predicting the outcomes of all eight matches he foresaw at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa (Germany's seven matches plus the final). He is known as the world's most famous *O. vulgaris*. Note that the German diphthong "au" tends to sound closer to "ao" than "au" to Japanese speakers, which is why Japan's public broadcaster, NHK, transcribes his name as "Paoru." In addition, Japanese-language media commonly referred to him affectionately as "Paul-kun." Life Birth Paul hatched from an egg at the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth, southern England. During his lifetime, he was kept at the Sea Life Oberhausen aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. The facility is operated under a franchise by Merlin Entertainments, a company that owns amusement parks and other attractions. Paul was named after the title character of the poem *Der Tintenfisch Paul Oktopus* (Paul the Octopus) by German children's author Boy Lornsen. According to Sea Life's entertainment director, Daniel Fey, Paul displayed intelligence from an early age.
