Mike the Headless Chicken (April 1945 – March 1947) was an American rooster famous for surviving for 18 months after his head was cut off. Overview On September 10, 1945, on a farm in Fruita, Colorado, farmer Lloyd Olsen and his wife Clara were butchering chickens when one of them was decapitated. Ordinarily, the bird would have died immediately, but instead, it began stumbling around without its head, preening its feathers, and even pecking for food as if nothing had happened. Seeing this bizarre chicken continue to move despite losing its head, Olsen decided to wait and see what would happen overnight. The next day, the chicken was still alive. Seeing this, when Lloyd went to the meat market to sell the butchered chickens, he took the headless bird along and bet people beers on whether a chicken could live without its head. As a result, rumors of the headless chicken spread, eventually attracting the attention of a local newspaper. Two weeks later, at the invitation of a sideshow promoter, Lloyd and the chicken traveled about 300 miles (480 km) to Salt Lake City, Utah. Lloyd brought the chicken, which he had named Mike, to the University of Utah. Though the scientists could not hide their astonishment, they conducted an examination and theorized that a blood clot had prevented Mike from bleeding to death by blocking the carotid artery. They also concluded that Mike was able to walk despite having lost his head because his brainstem and most of one ear remained intact. Afterward, the promoter toured across the United States with the couple and Mike.
