The Emu War, also known as the Great Emu War, was a nuisance wildlife management military operation undertaken in Australia in late 1932 to curb the emu population in the Campion district of Western Australia. Because soldiers armed with machine guns were deployed in this attempt to cull the emus, the media began referring to the incident as a "war." Background The emu is Australia's largest native bird. It is a large, flightless bird capable of running at speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. Following their breeding season each year, emus migrate from inland regions toward the coast. Emus are omnivores, feeding on plants, fruits, and insects. After World War I, Australian ex-soldiers, along with a number of British veterans, took up farming in marginal areas of Western Australia. When the Great Depression struck in 1929, these farmers were encouraged by the government to increase their wheat production with the promise of assistance in the form of subsidies, but the promised subsidies never materialized. Despite the government's recommendations and promised subsidies, wheat prices continued to fall, and by October 1932, the situation had become critical. While preparing to harvest their spring crops, farmers also threatened to refuse to deliver their wheat. The farmers' plight was exacerbated by the arrival of as many as 20,000 emus during their post-breeding seasonal migration.
