The Centennial Light Bulb (Centennial Light) is an incandescent light bulb that has been burning since 1901 and, as of 2026, is considered to be the world's longest-lasting light bulb. It is located at 4550 East Avenue in Livermore, California, and is maintained by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. The bulb has been recognized by Guinness World Records, and its record-breaking longevity has also been acknowledged by Ripley's Believe It or Not! and General Electric. History The Centennial Light was originally a 30- to 60-watt bulb, but it is now very dim, emitting light equivalent to only a 4-watt nightlight. The bulb has a fairly standard construction, featuring hand-blown glass and a carbon filament, and was manufactured in the late 1890s by the Shelby Electric Company in Shelby, Ohio. Many nearly identical examples of this bulb still exist, and it is believed that working ones can still be found. According to Zylpha Bernal Beck, the bulb was donated to the fire department by her father, Dennis Bernal, in 1901. Bernal owned the Livermore Power and Water Company and donated the bulb to the firehouse when he sold the business. This story is supported by testimonies from volunteer firefighters of that era. Evidence indicates that the bulb has hung in at least four different locations. It was originally installed in a carriage house on L Street and was later moved to a garage used by the police and fire departments in downtown Livermore.
