1 This is a story I heard when I was a child from an old man in our village named Mohei. A long time ago, in a place called Nakayama near our village, there was a small castle where a lord known as Lord Nakayama was said to have lived. In the mountains not far from Nakayama, there lived a fox named Gon. Gon was a little fox who lived all alone in a hole he had dug in a forest overgrown with ferns. Night and day, he would come out to the nearby villages and do nothing but play pranks. He would dig up sweet potatoes in the fields and scatter them about, set fire to drying rapeseed husks, pluck the red chili peppers hanging behind farmers' houses and run off with them—he did all sorts of mischief. It happened one autumn. It had rained continuously for two or three days, during which Gon couldn't go outside and had to stay curled up in his hole. When the rain finally stopped, Gon crawled out of his hole with a sigh of relief. The sky had cleared up beautifully, and the shrill cries of shrikes echoed in the air. Gon made his way to the bank of a stream near the village. Raindrops still sparkled on the plumes of the surrounding pampas grass. Usually the stream had little water, but after three days of rain, it had swollen dramatically. The pampas grass and bush clover along the banks, which were never submerged under normal circumstances, were now knocked flat and tossed about by the muddy yellow water. Gon walked downstream along the muddy path. Glancing ahead, he saw someone standing in the river, doing something. Gon crept into the tall grass so he wouldn't be seen, and peered out intently from his hiding place. "That's Hyoju," Gon thought.
